"Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else."

Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities (1972). "Le città, come i sogni, sono costruite di desideri e di paure, anche se il filo del loro discorso è segreto, le loro regole assurde, le prospettive igannevoli, e ogni cosa ne nasconde un’altra." It’s really pretty in Italian. (via fullerenes)

mister-nobody:

artwork by Walid Elsawi

A dozen statements, taken from the artist’s ongoing interview project are written on glowing neon boxes, peppered around the space. The interview consists of responses he gives to the question “are you an artist?” a means of exploring the current climate of contemporary art, and the cult of personality, with a tongue-in-cheek emphasis on certain stereotypes, perceived pre-requisites or trends. Jacques-Louis David, Oath of the Horatii, 1784
Things to think about when studying:
What movement does this painting fit into?
What elements of the work does the artist draw your attention to? (both narrative and stylistic)
